A SAMPLE SELECTION APPROACH TO CENSORED DEMAND SYSTEMS AgEcon
Yen, Steven T.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
A censored demand system estimator is proposed by extending the sample selection model of Heckman. Censoring is governed by a selection mechanism which avoids the restricitve Tobit parameterization. Results of application to household consumption of beverages suggest the estimator produces slightly different elasticity estimates from the Tobit estimator. Demands for beverages are nearly unitary elastic, and net substitution is an obvious pattern.

An Evaluation of the Soda Tax with Multivariate Nonparametric Regressions AgEcon
Belasco, Eric J.; Ghosh, Sujit K.; Chidmi, Benaissa.
This research extends past work by Shonkwiler and Yen (1999) by allowing for distributional flexibility and nonlinear responses in the form of established semiparametric and nonparametric regressions. The proposed models are shown to outperform the parametric version typically used in demand analysis to characterize a system of censored equations in terms of model fit and prediction power. Using the developed models, we derive elasticities associated with different individual-specific scenarios with regard to the recently proposed “penny-an-ounce” tax on soft drinks sweetened with sugar.

Buckley–James method for analyzing censored data, with an application to a cardiovascular disease and an HIV/AIDS study AgEcon
Cui, James.
The Buckley–James method and the Cox proportional hazards model were proposed in the 1970s. Both methods can be used to analyze survival-type data, although the former focuses on calculation of the expected value of the survival time and the latter on the relative risk of explanatory variables on the failure event. In cardiovascular disease epidemiological studies, it is essential to correct the effect of taking antihypertensive medicine, which means we need to calculate the expected blood pressure for people who take the medicine. I developed a Stata program to calculate the Buckley–James estimate. I will describe how to use this program to calculate the expected value of a censored outcome and illustrate the method through an example from a...

Children’s Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables: Do School Environment and Policies Affect Choice in School Meals? AgEcon
Ishdorj, Ariun; Crepinsek, Mary Kay; Jensen, Helen H..
Considering most children spend a majority of their weekdays at school and, on average, obtain more than one-third of their daily caloric intake from meals consumed at school during the school year, school is a natural place to implement nutrition policies that would help develop healthy eating habits and improve health and well-being of children. At the same time, local school meal policies may influence what foods are offered and how the foods are prepared. In this regard, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) two school meal programs can play an important role in children’s diets and food habit formation and thus positively influence children’s health. The focus of our research is children’s intakes of fruits and vegetables by location of...

Farm Level Impacts of Bt Corn Adoption in a Developing Country: Evidence from the Philippines AgEcon
Mutuc, Maria Erlinda M.; Pan, Suwen; Rejesus, Roderick M.; Yorobe, Jose M., Jr..
This article examines the ex post farm-level impacts of Bt corn adoption in the Philippines. Using an econometric approach that addresses simultaneity, selection, and censoring problems, we show that Bt corn adoption provides modest but statistically significant increases in farm-level yields and profits. Furthermore, our results suggest that farm-level yield and profit impacts of Bt corn adoption are underestimated when censoring in the pesticide application variable is not considered in the estimation procedures. Previous literature have emphasized the importance of simultaneity and selection problems but this is the first study that have raised the issue of censoring problems in estimating the farm-level effects of Bt corn adoption.

Impact Assessment of Bt Corn Adoption in the Philippines AgEcon
Mutuc, Maria Erlinda M.; Rejesus, Roderick M.; Pan, Suwen; Yorobe, Jose M., Jr..
This article examines the impact of Bt corn adoption in the Philippines using an econometric approach that addresses simultaneity, selection, and censoring problems. Although previous literature emphasizes the importance of simultaneity and selection problems, this is the first study that addresses the issue of censoring in estimating the effects of Bt corn adoption at the farm in a developing country context. We show that Bt corn adoption provides modest but statistically significant increases in farm yields and profits. Furthermore, our results provide some evidence of inference errors that can potentially arise when censoring in the pesticide application variable is ignored in the estimation procedures.

Modeling Censored Data Using Mixture Regression Models with an Application to Cattle Production Yields AgEcon
Belasco, Eric J.; Ghosh, Sujit K..
This research develops a mixture regression model that is shown to have advantages over the classical Tobit model in model fit and predictive tests when data are generated from a two step process. Additionally, the model is shown to allow for flexibility in distributional assumptions while nesting the classic Tobit model. A simulated data set is utilized to assess the potential loss in efficiency from model misspecification, assuming the Tobit and a zero-inflated log-normal distribution, which is derived from the generalized mixture model. Results from simulations key on the finding that the proposed zero-inflated log-normal model clearly outperforms the Tobit model when data are generated from a two step process. When data are generated from a Tobit...

Quality Risk and Profitability in Cattle Production: A Multivariate Approach AgEcon
Belasco, Eric J.; Schroeder, Ted C.; Goodwin, Barry K..
This study evaluates quality, production, and price risk within the context of overall profit variability in fed cattle production. The approach used offers a flexible way to estimate a large system of equations with more than three jointly related censored outcomes. Trade-offs between quality and yield grade levels and production measures, such as average daily gain and feeding efficiency, are evaluated. Simulation procedures are used to assess the impact of quality risk on overall profit variability. Results make an important contribution to existing research by explaining why price signals through grid quality grade premiums may not generate intended producer responses.

Semiparametric Estimation of Consumer Demand Systems with Micro Data AgEcon
Sam, Abdoul G.; Zheng, Yi.
This article proposes a semiparametric two-step procedure for estimating a censored consumer demand system with micro data. The semiparametric estimator considered in the first step is suggested by Klein and Spady (1993). This estimator, used as a counterpart of the probit estimator in a conventional two-step model, does not make any distributional assumptions about the disturbances and so is exempt from model misspecification and plausible heteroscedasticity. In the second step, we motivate the choice of the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) as an economic representation of consumers' demand behavior. Implementing our proposed semiparametric two-step procedure as well as Shonkwiler and Yen (1999)'s two-step model to a household meat consumption dataset...

The Demand for Meats in Indonesia: A Censored Regression Approach AgEcon
Hutasuhut, Maradoli; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Griffith, Garry R.; Doran, Howard E..
In this study, meat consumption and socio-demographic data from the 1990, 1993 and 1996 SUSENAS Household Food Expenditure and Consumption Surveys were employed to estimate the demand for meats in Indonesia. The provinces of DKI Jakarta and West Java were chosen as the areas of study because of the population, level of meat consumption and the availability and quality of information in these two provinces. Several statistical and econometric procedures were performed. Firstly, a cluster analysis (Nicol, 1991) was used to aggregate the 16 meat types recorded in the SUSENAS into four Meat Groups (MG-1, 2, 3 and 4). Secondly, a double truncation procedure was used to estimate the linear approximation of the Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) because of the...

THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF A FISCAL FOOD POLICY AgEcon
Salois, Matthew J.; Tiffin, J. Richard.
This paper examines the health effects of a fiscal food policy based on a combination of fat taxes and thin subsidies. The fat tax is based on the saturated fat content of food items while the thin subsidy is applied to select fruit and vegetable items. The policy is designed to be revenue neutral so that the subsidy exactly offsets the revenue from the fat tax. A model of food demand is estimated using Bayesian methods that accounts for censoring and infrequency of purchase (the problem of unit values is also discussed). The estimated of demand elasticities are used to compute nutrient elasticities which demonstrate how consumption of specific nutrients changes based on price changes in particular foods from the fiscal policy. Results show that while the...
